There was a house of the Knights Templars at Temple Dinsley founded before 1147 having six brethren and six corrodies in 1308. The property passed to the Knights Hospitallers in 1324, became a house of that order after 1338 and was a preceptory in the reign of Richard II. The manor was let out privately in 1507. (2-3)
This early 18th century house (5) was extensively altered and enlarged in 1908. It replaces an earlier one, the property of the Sadleir family from the dissolution until 1712. Finds from the site include a 13th century coffin lid. Grade 2. (4-5)
Temple Dinsley is now Princess Helena College; the fabric is mainly 19c - 20c with no visible evidence of the earlier house. (6) |
