Summary : Castle Meadows at Creswell Farm is the alleged site site of a castle, however the placename may be misidentified and may not refer to an actual castle.. |
More information : "The castle of John de Leycestre (fl.1278-90) is said to be 1.5 miles along the Luton Road at Castle Farm" (2). (Causewell Farm, TL 157147). Listed as a doubtful site (1). This is almost certainly a 19th century mis-identification. The name 'Causewell' is a corruption of 'Creswelle' which means "cress spring", water-cress beds are shown nearby at TL 159146. Castle Meadow is named on the Tithe Apportionement of about 1840. There are no other references to a castle at Wheathampstead (3). (1-3) Creswell Farm is a small 17th century house of two storeys with a one-storey extension on the southwest. (4)
