More information : [TL 14390710] ABBEY GATE [G.T.] (1) The Great Gatehouse of St. Alban's Abbey is a three storyed building of flint rubble with stone dressings, considerably repaired with brick. It has an embattled parapet, behind which is a tiled roof. It was built by Thomas de la Mare, probably in 1363. In the middle is a large vaulted passage two storeys in height. On each side of this are two vaulted chambers entered by doorways in the S. archway. One of the chambers on the west has vaulting made of re-used 13th c. vaulting ribs. AO/60/318/8. (2) The former gateway was blown down in a storm, probably in 1362, and the new one was probably completed by 1365. Abbot Delamare had a licence in 1357 to crenellate and the new gateway and a wall from it to the Aula Regia see [TL 10 NW 23.5] probably formed part of a general scheme of defence against the townspeople.
The gateway was used as a jail from 1553, and continued in use as such and as a Court House until 1871, when the Grammar School [see TL 10 NW 23.9] was moved into it. (3) The Abbey Gatehouse at St Albans is scheduled as an ancient monument. (4) Outstanding condition. (5) Grade I. (6)
