Ivinghoe Nunnery (or St Margaret's de Bosco or Mursley) was founded for Benedictine Nuns in c. 1130-60 by Henry de Blois (Bishop of Winchester) at Nettleden with Potten End and dissolved in 1536. In 1802 the buildings were almost entire, and the refectory remained till the early 19th century. Traces of it still remained near St Margarets' Farm in 1908. (2,3)
The site of the nunnery is identifiable as an area of ground disturbance in a permanent pasture field covering an area of c 100.0m square centred at the OS 6" siting. Place-names St Margaret's Farm, St Margaret's Copse. (4) |
