More information : Chipperfield Common. Two possible tumuli about 1/4 mile south of the church, one on either side of the pathway leading through the wood. (1) Two tumuli on Chipperfield Common. "They have never been opened but an opinion exists that they are merely archery butts." (2) Not noted by V.C.H. (Ancient Earthwork). (3) On Chipperfield Common - two mounds of similar appearance and dimensions 'A' - TL 04620126: a circular mound 15.5m diameter, and 1.1m high with the remains of a broad shallow ditch approximately 4.0m wide and 0.2m deep. 'B' - TL 04710121: a circular mound 15.0m diameter and 1.2m high with remains of a ditch approximately 4.0m wide and 0.2m deep. They are situated on gently sloping high ground at about 440' 00; both are planted with conifers. These mounds have the appearance of bowl barrows: that they are archery butts seems doubtful. 25" A.M. survey carried out. (4) TL 046013; TL; 047012. Two barrows on Chipperfield Common - scheduled.
