More information : [TF93603678] Wishing Wells [NR] (1) The wishing wells of Walsingham Priory were another inducement to pilgrims to visit the shrine of Our Lady, and comprised two round wells and a square medicinal bath, the latter being endowed with the faculty of healing all diseases connected with the head and stomach. The round wells gained their title from the idea that any person who drank from them could obtain whatever they asked for. The two round wells are still perfect and lined with ashlar stone; near them are the remains of the medicinal bath. These wells are said to have sprung up at the command of the Virgin Mary, before the chapel was commenced, to indicate its site centuries later. There is a legend to this effect. (2) Both the bath and the wells are now in excellent condition, indicating that the former has certainly been restored and the others probably have. They are set in a small ornamental garden access to which is gained through a re-erected Norman doorway at TF93413680. (3)
