More information : [TF91483978] Crabb's Castle [NR] (Site of) (1)
"Site of an old castle where several Roman coins have been found from time to time. The remains of several brick and flint stones are still found on the spot." (2)
J. F. Williams 1930 suggested that this was a saucer barrow, but this is more than doubtful. The only remains on the site are medieval or later. (3)
Crabb's Castle almost ploughed flat. Tiles and mortar on site. (4)
This site has been ploughed and is under cultivation. A slight rise is the only evidence left. [See St. Joseph A/P FQ 54] (5)
As noted by authy 5 above only a slight rise is visible. It is at present under barley and perambulation was not possible. The farmer could add nothing constructive to the above information but did say 'a young man' excavated here and produced some pottery. Who he was and what became of the finds is not remembered. (6) |
