HEMPTON PRIORY

DESCRIPTION + /

An Augustinian Priory. It was originally founded as a hospital before 1135 by Roger de St Martin and Richard Ward, the latter becoming an Augustinian canon shortly after the foundation, and refounding the hospital as an Augustinian Priory for 3-4 canons. The hospital continued as such until at least 1200. Dissolved in 1537. The foundations of a long building are incorporated in a later building, and there is evidence for a precinct wall.
