Wendling. The Abbey of the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded in or before 1267. It was one of the smaller abbeys with never more than the original 13 canons. Dissolved 1536-7. (2)
Masonry and earthwork remains surveyed for Royal Commission on Historical Monuments in 1957 (detailed plan and earlier plan of 1810 supplied). (3)
The site of the church, and its adjacent buildings, has deteriorated considerably since the 1810 survey. Only fragments of walling are now visible, and the slightly elevated position is popular with cattle who have reduced the site to an uneven muddy expanse. To the south across a recently re-aligned stream are fishponds, associated water channels, and a range of building foundations. Resurveyed at 1:2500. (4)
