Summary : Earthwork remains of an Iron Age hillfort damaged by coal working and forestry.
More information : [NT 9638 3793] Hill Fort [L.B.] (1) Blackchester. An earthwork roughly circular in plan with multiple ramparts enclosing approx. 1/2 acre. (2) This fort is correctly delineated, though it has been considerably damaged by old coal-workings. The site falls steeply to the north where there is only one rampart, whilst the entrance, appears to have been in the S.W. quadrant. (3) Listed as a probable pre-Roman multivallate earthwork. (4) Field inspection not possible, due to almost impenetrable afforestation. (5) NT 964 379. Blackchesters, Northumberland. Listed in gazetteer as a multivallate hillfort covering 0.40ha. (6)
