Summary : A former early 14th century chapel and hermitage which was converted into a farmhouse in the 17th century. It is of flint with stone and clunch dressings to the medieval part whilst the timber framing of the early 17th century side extension has been mainly replaced with brick and flint. There are late 17th century brick service and rear stair extensions. |
More information : (TF 88801743) Priory Farm on remains of (NAT) Hermitage (NR).(1) On the common in Litcham Parish there was formerly a hermitage.(2) Priory Farm built on a portion of a hermitage; part of the old wall can be seen at the SE corner.(3) Priory farmhouse incorporates 14th. cent chapel. Stone quoins and buttresses. Grade I.(4) Litcham Priory (formerly Priory Farm) is mainly 19th century but the fabric incorporates two 14th century gable ends and part of the south wall of a (? wayside) chapel (authy 4). Flint foundations are said to have been found (a) but these have since been reburied, their identity is unknown. See photographs. Published 25" survey revised on AM.(5)
