Summary : Augustinian priory dedicated to St Mary and St Nicholas founded before 1260, originally termed a hospital but the master being a prior under Austin rule it was designated a priory. It was in decay in 1475-6 and was re-established as a cell of the priory of West Acre and dissolved in 1538. There is evidence that Abbey Farm contains monastic walling, which suggests that it was built on the South gable of the domestic range of the priory. |

Augustinian priory dedicated to St Mary and St Nicholas founded before 1260, originally termed a hospital but the master being a prior under Austin rule it was designated a priory. In 1475 it was re-established as a cell of the priory of West Acre (2) and dissolved in 1538 (3).
The south wall of the present 19th century house contains some remains of the priory with rough traces of masonry further west. (4)
The remains, published on OS 25" 1904, have been demolished. The field in which they stood has been arable for many years, and only a stone scatter can be seen at the site. The owner of Abbey Farm (TF 79652302) stated that the core of the ground floor is of the Abbey and is almost completely original; this is in part corroborated by the thickness of the walls. A blocked doorway and window can be seen on the south wall. See photographs. (5) |
