Summary : The site of Beaupre Hall, a late medieval great house. It was built by Nicholas de Baupre in the first half of the 16th century. An Elizabethan hall porch and north east wing were added around 1570. The hall ceased to be a family residence in about 1939 when it was taken over as a military base by the RAF. It was possibly the battery headquarters of 345 Searchlight in 1941. After the war the hall drifted into disrepair and in 1960 an attempt was made to preserve at least the Gate Towers for posterity. However, in 1966, when the rest of the hall was demolished, the gatehouse became unsafe and it too was destroyed. The site is now occupied by a modern bungalow.Beaupre Hall was a medieval great house consisting of a central turreted gatehouse with connecting ranges to end pavilions. A chapel was located in the north pavilion. There was also a dovecote and the house was surrounded by a moat. 19th century illustrations indicate that the house was two storeys with an attic wing, a turreted gatehouse, gable stack and Venetian window. There was a second two-storey range with projecting porch tower. |
