More information : [Area: TF 43827677] The village of Ailby is mentioned
in 1086 and 1242. Aleby in Rigsby in 1334. (1-2)

Very slight traces of earthworks are visible on air photographs. (3)

The earthworks noted by authy. 3 are field roads, drainage and
quarrying and are not representative of desertion.
The village was probably centred about where the present farm
house and cottages stand, but no extant remains were noted. (4)

The Medieval settlement referred to by the previous authorities was
visible as earthworks and mapped from good quality air photographs.
The remains of tofts extend south from the modern Ailby Farmhouse.
These are visible as five ditch defined conjoined enclosures
centred at TF 4380 7688. Within one of the tofts is the remains of
a possible stack stand or building. It is defined by banks,
measures approximately 5m by 5m and is centred at TF 4385 7691. To
the east of the tofts the remains of crofts are visible containing
four blocks of ridge and furrow separated by ditch defined field
boundaries. These are on average 80m in length and centred at
TF 4386 7689. More ridge and furrow and the fragmentary remains of
croft boundaries are visible to the south and west of the main
settlement remains at TF 4390 7671 and TF 4354 7689.
