More information : [TF 4493 6583] MOAT [GT]. (1) The monks of Bardney had a large mansion at Monksthorpe built in 1318, surrounded by a moat, which still remains, encompassing about two acres. (2-3) Dense undergrowth made it impossible to ascertain whether any trace remains of the house. Published Survey (25") revised. (4)
The moat recorded by Authorities 1-4 was seen as an earthwork and mapped from poor quality air photographs:-
The moat, of probable Medieval date, is visible on three sides only on air photographs. It is 140m in length and has an apparent entrance on the north side. It is more centrally located at TF 4495 6583. (Morph No. LI.180.3.1)
