More information : [TF 42756705] MOAT [GT]. (1) [Centred TF 428 678] Moat and other earthworks (indicating shrunken village site) seen on air photographs. (2) Ashby-by-Partney still exists as a substantial village, and all earthworks other than the moat at TF 42756705 constitute shrinkage. Moat resurveyed at 1/2500. (3)
The moat and evidence of settlement of probable Medieval or Post Medieval date, recorded by Authorities 1-3, were mapped from poor quality air photographs. The following features were identified:-
The moat was seen as an earthwork at TF 4278 6704, and is visible on three sides only. The enclosure is 65m wide and has a possible length of 100m.
To the east of the moat is a rectilinear, ditch-defined system of ten conjoined enclosures, seen as cropmarks at TF 4289 6701. The enclosures have an average dimension of 50m by 45m.
To the south of the enclosure system is a field system of ridge and furrow, which remains as earthworks, at TF 4288 6673. The blocks of ridge and furrow average 130m by 50m and have some associated ditch boundaries. (Morph No. LI.178.6.1-3)
