More information : [Approx. Area - TF 3145 8376] Maltby, lost village with church, was already very small in 1334. The date of the last institution of a priest is not known.
Beresford gives area: TF 314844. This is agreed by the Research Group (2) who say that the eastern part of the site has been bulldozed to make a market garden. The remainder has now been scheduled. Baker, however, gives area: TF 3155 8347 which extends into Tathwell parish and includes the moat at TF 3146 8401 [see TF 38 SW 1] and a further moat at TF 3159 8364. [TF 38 SW 6]. Air photogrpahs (1/20,000 scale)(5) do not give a clear indication of the extent of the site, details of which are shown on St. Joseph A.P. (1-6) Modern cultivation has almost completely obscured surface evidence of this village; but the most probable centre is at TF 312 841 where extensive earthworks have formerly existed. Published survey (25" 1906) revised and annotated. (7) Surface finds over a large area [Cent. as in authy 7] comprised pottery late Saxon - 18c. including Stamford ware. (8)
The village remains referred to by the previous authorities were visible as earthworks on earlier photography but have been subsequently partially ploughed out and some areas are visible as cropmarks. The Medieval settlement extends north and south of a kink in the Horncastle road and has been mapped from good quality air photographs. No settlement remains were visible at the grid given by Beresford (referred to by authority 1 as at TF 314 844). No remains were found in the area described by Baker (referred to by authority 4 as cTF 3155 8347). The main area of occupation appears to be centred at TF 3147 8367.
The fragmentary remains of tofts and crofts are visible as rectilinear ditch defined enclosures extending from TF 3099 8441 in the north to TF 3156 8355 in the south. A hollow way extends from the southern limits of the settlement northwards for 420m and is centred TF 3148 8376. This is flanked by the very fragmentary remains of possible tofts and crofts. Another hollow way, centred TF 3103 8431, at the north end of the settlement continues the line of the modern Horncastle road eastwards before turning northwards and crossing the modern road.
The moats referred to by the previous authority have also been mapped but have been recorded elsewhere. The moat at TF 3159 8634 (TF 38 SW 6) is situated on the southern limits of the Medieval settlement and may represent a manorial complex associated with the settlement. The other moat at TF 3146 8401 is much smaller and its significance and relationship to the Medieval settlement is not clear (see TF 38 SW 1). (Morph No. LI.198.2.5-15, 23, 26)
