More information : [TF 3294 8726] approx. to TF 3516 8875 approx.] Monk's Dike [G.T.] (1) Aswell, or Ashwell, south of the town, together with St. Helen's well nearby (2 holy wells), once supplied water to Louth Park Abbey, by means of a cut called Monk's Dyke. The course is represented on the 1st edition O.S. 1" map as terminating at Abbey House. The published entry at TF 3601 8854 appears to be incorrect. (2-3) This ditch is maintained and extended as modern drainage; it is culverted in parts and exhibits no traces of antiquity. (4)
The Medieval water channel, referred to by the previous authorities, was visible for 900m from TF 3423 8753 to the edge of the 1: 10, 000 scale quarter sheet at TF 3500 8792. It then continues up to Louth Abbey up to TF 3516 8875 (see TF 38 NE 2). (Morph No. LI.205.3.12)
