More information : [Area TF 3248 7950] Maidenwell, separately assessed in 1334, was united to Farforth parish in 1450. or [?] 1592. Probably depopulated, c. 1400-28. In 1563 there were four families. (1) Earthworks clearly seen on air photographs. Scheduled. (2-3) Maidenwell retains hamlet status, with some 20 families resident. A large area of Medieval field-banks is evident, but is much disturbed by quarrying. It seems likely that the present settlement overlies the nucleus of the Medieval village. (4)
The Medieval settlement remains referred to by the previous authorities were seen as earthworks, around Maidenwell village, and mapped from good quality air photographs. The remains of tofts and crofts are visible extending north and south of the track on the east side of the present village. These are centred at TF 3250 7953 and extend north as far as TF 3231 7969, south as far as TF 3260 7923, west as far as TF 3220 7950, and east as far as TF 3272 7962. Within the tofts south of the track is a possible building platform and pond centred at TF 3259 7953 and TF 3257 7954. A large quarry, centred at TF 3253 7938, has removed part of the crofts on the south side of the village. (Morph No. LI.54.4.1-8)
