More information : [TF 30476449] ST ANDREW'S CHURCH [G.T.] (Site of). (1) [Area TF 30726480] A priest was last instituted to the parish church of Claxby Pluckacre in 1660-2. Claxby Pluckacre is mentioned as early as 1086 and air cover shows traces of earthworks of the lost village, mainly between Hall Farm and The Grange. (2-4) Traces of desertion, centred at TF 307646, are not extensive and are confined to field banks, ditches and amorphous earthworks. Published survey (25"), of earthworks representing the site of the church, correct. (5)
Earthwork remains of the possible deserted Medieval or Post Medieval village of Claxby Pluckacre were seen as earthworks and mapped from good quality air photographs. The grassed over foundations of a possible church were recorded at approximately the same grid reference as that quoted by authority 1. There is a ditch-defined enclosure surrounding the church on three sides. There is a series of tofts to the east of "Hall Farm". The tofts are ditch-defined, centred at TF 3075 6465 and form a linear pattern running north-south. They are defined in part by a trackway at the southern end, centred at TF 3070 6450.
Three possible buildings were recorded in amongst the tofts, as embanked rectangular enclosures, 12m by 8m, at TF 3080 6470, TF 3064 6462 and TF 3086 6485. Surrounding the village remains is a field system. Nine blocks of ridge and furrow were recorded, ranging in length from 110m to 310m. (Morph No. LI.122.1.1 - 1.6) This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database. (6) |
