Summary : Medieval pottery kiln and two pits identified by field walking and excavations near Old Bolingbroke Rectory. The kiln was a five-flued Musty type 3 with a diameter of 9 feet. The pits contained pottery wasters of jugs, pancheons, storage jars, chafing dishes and costrels in Toynton/Bolingbroke Ware, a hard sandy fabric, often with an olive green to brownish glaze and in production from the mid 15th to the early 18th century. Fieldwalking has also located other kilns indicating a large-scale industry. |
