Summary : Medieval pottery kiln and clay pits were recorded during excavations at The Roses, Toynton All Saints during the 1950s and 1960s. The kiln was a Musty type 3 kiln, which was circular in plan and had a diameter of 10ft, the kiln walls survived to a height of 18 inches. The kiln produced a range of glazed jugs pancheons and cooking pots in Toynton ware, a sandy fabric of local Jurassic clay which was often glazed. The kiln was archaeomagnetically dated to 1275-1300.
More information : [TF 391637] A battery of kilns, working in the 15th and 16th
centuries and perhaps continuing into the 17th cent., was
identified by Mrs E.H Rudkin in 1955. Sherds of Stamford
ware, unstratified, were found during work on the kilns.

[TF 395634] A kiln with five or six flues, of c 1300 A.D., was
located in the field called 'The Roses` and excavated in 1958-9
by E.H Rudkin and H Whitaker. Jugs, tiles, water pipes and
varieties of domestic pots are represented. (1-8) (11-12)

Mrs. E.H.Rudkin records the following site on her personal
plan (25") of Toynton All Saints:-

TF 39466341 'Roses` kilns and pottery, c. 1270 - 1350.

Mrs. Rudkin is at present excavating this site and has a
considerable collection of material from it, including
Stamford ware which was found in material used for levelling
the floor.
