TF 315248. Elloe Stone, Scheduled. (6)
This is one of the few cross-shafts in England which was used for a non-sepulchral purpose. The monument has marked the meeting place of the wapentake since at least the reign of Henry VII. The weathering on the stone, particularly on the south-west face, indicates that that it is either in situ, or very close to its original position. It is possible that the stone does mark the site of a burial or burials. Fully described. (7) |
