Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 353734

Hob Uid: 353734
Location :
Lincolnshire
South Holland
Fleet
Grid Ref : TF3856023110
Summary : Site of a mound, possibly a motte. Pottery finds date from the Iron Age to the 18th century, with significant Saxon and Saxo-Norman types. The mound has been ploughed down and is no longer visible on the ground.
More information : [TF 3856 2311] TUMULUS [O.E.] (Site of) (1)

The site was excavated in 1913 but no report made. Pottery in the museum of the Spalding Gentlemen's Society, from this excavation, included two sherds classified by Hawks as 1.A. 'A'. These probably came from the old land surface. The rest of the pottery examined by G C Dunning was dated from 11th or 12th century to 18th century AD. The evidence of the pottery and former existence of a mound is suggestive of a motte or castle mound. [See 25" 1931 for survey of the site before destruction.] The mound and a possible outer ditch show as soil marks on A.P's.
(2-3)

Area under crop. Lincoln and Spalding museums have no record of material from this site. Detail of mound cancelled on A.M. (4)

TF 385232 Medieval and supposed Roman pottery among finds from the 1913 excavations (as described auth 2). Now only a wide raised area marks the site of the medieval manor. This may have incorporated IA pottery but the possibility of a Saxon date cannot be entirely excluded. (5)

H Healey viewed the pottery in 1972: Middle Saxon and Saxo-Norman types included. See also TF 32 SE 18. (6)(7)

TF 385232. Probable motte. (8)
