Summary : Church now in two parts since the nave has been demolished. The chancel is 15th century, heavily restored 1879 and 1894, with a 20th century extension. Ashlar, red brick, dressed coursed rubble. Plain tile roofs with coped gables and decorative ridge cross to the east. Chancel with 19th century apsidal east end and 19th century north aisle, 20th century extension to west. West wall with evidence of former nave roof line. The church tower is 15th century, restored 1879 and 1894. Ashlar, red brick, rubble, in the main rendered.

[TF 3962 1838] Bell Tower [G.T.] (1)

The c.1300 church of Sutton St. James was rebuilt in 1879 and
1894, in part of re-used material. The nave was pulled down
during the Commonwealth, leaving the 15th century bell tower
free-standing. (2-4)

The church is in normal use.

25/1 B Church of St. James

Old square 15C tower remains, stucco on stone. The nave has gone
and the chancel was rebuilt in 1879, and a N. aisle added. Some
of the old material incorporated. 15C octagonal font. (6)
