More information : [TF 20949799] Moats [GT]. (1) The old Hall of Thorganby, seat of the Willoughby family, was plundered by the Roundheads in 1643. (2) A datestone of the Hall gives the year 1648. There appears to have been a complete rebuilding at this period - see GP AO/63/20/3. The 'moats' are a complex system of fishponds and wild-life refuges, densely overgrown; published survey (25") correct. They are apparently contemporary with the Hall. (3)
TF 209 980 The Tithe Award map of 1841 shows continuous water channels without the breaks or causeways that fragment them now. They were called `Fishponds' then. They are perhaps more likely to be early 19th century and contemporary with the hall's reconstruction than with its earlier build, as previously suggested by the OS. Not investigated by RCHME fieldwork. (4)
