More information : [Area: TF 2148 8433] Tumulus [O.E.] (3 times). (1) `A' TF 2145 8460, Round barrow. `B' TF 2151 8446. Round barrow, 75 ft across and 4ft 5in high. `C' TF 2145 8406 Round barrow, 100 ft across and 10 ft high. Excavated in 1959, when a few scraps of gritty pottery too small to permit of positive identification, were found. Scheduled. (2-4) `A' & `B' - Two tree covered mounds. Their topographical situation and proximity to High Street and other proved tumuli supports a similar classification. Surveyed at 1/2500. `C' A large round barrow mutilated by an R.A.F. Observer Post. The engineer responsible stated that the excavation of 1959 was non-archaeological but that Lincoln Museum was informed. Mr Thompson (former Keeper of Antiquities Lincoln) visited the work but apparently showed little interest. The engineer knew of no archaeological finds and was surprised at the above note re-pottery. He was also unaware that the mound was scheduled, and said it was now AM property. Published survey (25") found correct. (5) Three barrows situated on the crest of a prominent ridge. `A', tree-covered bowl barrow, reduced in diameter by ploughing, and now measuring 13.0m in diameter by 0.6m high with a 0.4m high, plough baulk around the circumference. No trace of a ditch is visible. `B', tree-covered bowl barrow lying within a plantation. It measures 23.0m diameter by 1.3m high. No trace of a ditch is visible. `C', large bowl barrow disturbed by military activity. It measures about 31.0m diameter by 3.0m high though ploughing has encroached on the west side. No trace of a ditch visible. 25" Survey (1963) revised. (6)
The barrows A and C previously recorded at TF 2145 8460 and TF 2145 8406 were seen as earthworks and mapped from poor quality air photographs; they are as described by Authority 6. Barrow B could not be identified because of tree cover. (Morph No. LI.213.2.1, LI.213.3.1)
