[TF 2430 8771] Church. [GT] (Site of). (1)
South Cadeby village lay at the south boundary of Calcethorpe along both sides of the mediaeval road. The church was down by about 1450. In 1563 there were two families.
Site confirmed.
Scheduled.
Two fields centred at SK 242875 and SK 244877 named Cadeby Close. (2-5)
The church site, several steadings, roadways and many small fields are evident.
Surveyed at 1/2500. (6)
The remains of South Cadeby DMV is situated in a SW-NE valley under permanent pasture on either side of a dry water course.
The remains of at least seven steadings (average size 12.0m long by 8.0m wide) are visible associated with small crofts which are connected by paths and trackways to the surrounding enclosures. The average height of the enclosure earthworks is about 1.2m.
The supposed church site is marked by an irregular building platform 0.8m high with evidence of rubble walling on the NW side.
1:2500 survey 1963 correct. (7)
The Medieval deserted village of South Cadeby was seen as
earthworks and mapped from good quality air photographs. The
settlement remains extend NE-SW from TF 2457 8791 to TF 2408 8739.
Between 25 and 30 bank-defined enclosures were recorded,
preseumably tofts and crofts. they are either side of a central
hollow way which runs NE-SW for 670m, through the village.
A small building 15m by 6m was recorded at TF 2435 8762. Other
small enclosures could also be the remains of buildings at TF 2435
8769 and TF 2411 8747. There is a small roughly circular platform
at the same location as the church quoted by authority 1. The two
may be connected but a relationship is not certain.
