More information : [Area TF 2631 7934] Air photographs indicate the extent of the lost mediaeval village of Asterby. Traces of a large building seen, and three human skeletons and an ancient dagger dug up, in Hall Close, a field near the church at Asterby. [See Illustrations Card.] (1-3) Except for banks and ditches forming minor fields the earthworks in this area have been ploughed out. One steading is evident but this is modern. Human remains were found at TF 2630 7950 and were re-interred (inf. from farmer) Hall Close, where the skeletons and dagger were found in 1821 at TF 2645 7943 (a) is arable. No traces of a large building are visible. (4)

The Medieval settlement remains referred to by the previous authorities, were seen to the west of Asterby House, and mapped from good quality air photographs. The remains of possible crofts are visible as conjoined ditch defined enclosures on average 70m by 40m centred at TF 2629 7942. A possible hollow way extends east- west through the middle of these crofts. A mound of unknown purpose is visible in one of the crofts centred at TF 2643 7921. A block of ridge and furrow is visible on the north west edge of the Medieval settlement remains and is centred at TF 2623 7944. On the south edge of this is a possible stack stand visible as an enclosure, 5m by 5m, defined by low banks and centred at TF 2626 7937. Only the ridge and furrow survives as earthworks, the rest of the settlement remains have been ploughed flat and are now visible as cropmarks. (Morph No. LI.103.4.1-7)
