[Name TF 1201 9736] Wykeham Hamlet (G.T.] (Site of) (1)

There is mention of Wykeham (or Wykham) in 1334. (2)

The destruction of the site is reported by P Gathercole, who visited it together with J. Hurst of the Ministry of Works. (3)

The area has been mined for ironstone and restored. The only
recollected finds were two large mill stones. (4)(5)

The deserted settlement of Wykeham may be referred to in 1086 but is otherwise as poorly documented as Hardwick and Draycote. Its location at the head of the valley of Nettleton Beck is shown by the two closes of old enclosure in 1795 called Whicum Closes, and nearby Wykeham Well on OS sheets, as well as by surviving earthwork closes (a) on the east side of the valley, part overlain by slumping. (6)

The earthwork closes, which mark the site of Wykeham village as
described by authority 6, were mapped from good quality air
photographs. Seven bank defined enclosures were visible in all and
are centred at TF 1203 9718. Associated with these were two blocks
of ridge and furrow at TF 1197 9709 and TF 1194 9692 and two areas
of lynchets at TF 1188 9704 and TF 1223 9719. (Morph Nos
LI.295.4.1-5). The Hunting photography (6a) was not available at
the time of the survey.
