More information : [Area TF 15458617] South-east of Holtham Garrs Farm the foundations of the lost village of Holtham and a moat may be traced on available air cover. Holtham, "Howdome", was returned about 1565 as a hamlet of Legsby with four families. (1-2)
A manorial moat enclosing the fragmentary remains of three steadings, (only one of which is surveyable) centred to TF 1551 8621. There is no surface indication of a village in the area. Surveyed at 1/2500. (3)
Deserted settlement remains (TF 153 863) of a village or manor and monastic grange at Holtham. For a description of the documentary evidence and a plan of the site see reference 4. The earthworks, which occupied a field named Home Close and Moat in 1846, were destroyed between 1963 and 1971 (and are now visible as cropmarks), but they appear to have been inserted between the pre-existing arable furlongs. They were dominated by a large moat-like feature (centred at TF 1550 8621) subdivided into three internal paddocks. External features appear to include channels feeding and draining the ditch and other possible enclosures and a trackway. Traces of ridge and furrow are visible around the site. There are no obvious village remains. (4)
The remains referred to by the previous authority have also been mapped at 1:10,000 scale from air photographs. (5) |
