More information : [TF 16338730] MOAT [GT] (1)
The Gilbertine priory of St. Mary at Sixhills was founded as a double house between 1148 and 1154 (Mon. (a) gives c. 1145), and surrendered in 1538. Some of the remains may be seen worked up in the house and outbuildings of Grange Farm. Air photographs give some indication of the site. (2-5)
Architectural remains are mostly corbel heads set above doors and windows in the farmhouse (datestone 1747) and outbuildings. The earthworks comprise the remains of the perimeter moat and fishponds. Published survey 25" revised. (6)
A Medieval Gilbertine Priory and later Post Medieval settlement lies at around 70-75m above OD on Till at the foot of the west facing scarp of the Wolds. A substantial Post Dissolution house and garden existed here and there seems to have been a small hamlet here in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. For a detailed description of the documentary sources, a description of the earthworks and a plan see reference 7. Field walking has found evidence for a Medieval tile kiln. (7)
The site has also been mapped at 1:10,000 scale from air photographs. (8) |
