More information : [Area TF 107 554] On the OS 2" is a three sided earthwork or moat named 'Digby Grange'. Air photographs show what appears to be a small area of desertion, possibly bounded by a moat. The name suggests a monastic association and the VCH states that Catley Priory [TF 15 N.W.6] held lands and tenements at Digby and Rowston ['Rowston Grange', a farm, is immediately north of the area.] (1-3)
This area has now been ploughed and harrowed. Fragmentary building stone is evident and a few sherds of medieval pottery were found. Earthworks surveyed at 1/2500 prior to ploughing and retained for record purposes. (4)
Site ploughed and harrowed; only normal field debris noted on the surface. (5)
Additional reference. (6)
The above site was visible as earthworks on 1947 photography, but more recent photos show it has been levelled and is visible as cropmarks. The large rectangular enclosure (207 x 135m), described as a moat by authority 1, has internal divisions forming small enclosures. There is a pond with a mounded area inside, suggestive of a fishpond and a second more irregular shaped pond. Some areas have light and dark marks. The dark maculae possibly represent where buildings have been robbed and the lighter areas spreads of building material. (7-8) |
