SEMPRINGHAM PRIORY

The first Gilbertine double house founded by Gilbert of Sempringham in 1131 (TF13SW6) soon outgrew itself, and a new site was chosen for it in 1139. It was built with a double church, cloisters and buildings. Dissolved in 1538, The priory church was excavated in 1938-1939, when extensive foundations of the priory church were revealed. A well and fishponds are still visible
