In 1139 Baldwin Fitz Gilbert established the Benedictine Priory
of St. James at Deeping as a cell of Thorney Abbey. The house
was dissolved in 1539.
The old house north of the church (? Priory Farm) is probably
built on the site of the priory buildings, (2) but see TF 11
SW 21 for suggested alternative site.

On the south-east side of the churchyard is the priory tithe
barn, of coursed rubble, with porch, 90 ft by 20 ft.6in.
internally, variously described as 13th century, (5) probably
late 15th century, (6) & 17th. century (7). (2-7)

The tithe barn was demolished in 1963 and the site, to be used
for building three bungalows, is at TF 15780950.
Priory Farm is of Modern construction. There are no surface
indications or remains of the Monastic House. (8)
