More information : ['A' TF 0691 5240]. Romano British (3rd-4th century) pottery, a lead cistern, and cap of a column ploughed up in 1951. ['B' TF 0692 5267]. Further 3rd-4th century pottery ploughed up in 1951. (A.P's (2) show disturbance and rectangular markings here). Pottery and cap of column in Lincoln Museum. [TF 0690 5238 to TF 0714 5241]? Side road leaving "King Street" seen on J.T. Hayes' air photograph, in 1959. (1-2) The A.P's of this site taken by Hayes (in Lincoln Museum) show the side road leaving RR 260 at TF 0715 5241 and terminating at TF 0668 5246, and also rectangular cropmarks. The farmer stated that much Ro. building debris had been ploughed up recently in the neighbourhood of 'B'. The A.P. evidence together with the finds suggest a fairly extensive settlement. (See also TF 05 S.E. 11). (3) The settlement is located on level fields now under crop, and was not perambulated. Crop-marks of enclosures, the side road, and RR 260 itself are visible on OS air photographs.(a) The farmer (b) reports continuing finds of building stone in the vicinity of 'B', but no pottery. He also stated that, when found, the lead cistern from site 'A' had suffered damage in a fire, and portions of the top had been melted into a large globule which was in the bottom of the cistern. He kept it for two years, and then disposed of it for scrap. The pattern of the settlement is similar to others of this period existing in the fenlands to the east and south. (4)
The Romano-British settlement recorded by Authorities 1-4 was seen as cropmarks and mapped from good quality air photographs.
The settlement is situated on the west side of a Roman road (TF 05 SE 43) between two (possibly three) side roads, and consists of a system of large rectilinear enclosures with average dimensions of 100m and smaller rectangular enclosures with average dimensions of 20-30m; it lies between TF 0685 5251, TF 0700 5221, TF 0721 5225 and TF 0712 5250. The enclosures are superimposed with other features, a T-shaped trackway at TF 0700 5248 and a curvilinear enclosure (separately recorded as TF 05 SE 78) which suggests more than one phase of activity. Further north at TF 0686 5280, are two sides of a potential large rectilinear enclosure with minimum dimensions of 140m by 80m which may be associated with the enclosures to the south.
