The gatehouse was restored and converted into a residence in 1868. It is two storeyed with a three storey stair turret and is built of stone rubble with a flat, lead roof. The central archway has been blocked up. The 1868 extension to the north side was originally a coach house but now forms part of the residence. |
More information : [SS 75551360]. Affeton Castle. Remains of AFFETON [GT]. (1) Affeton Barton. Of the large manor house the gatehouse remains, though much altered in 1868. The main gateway is filled in but the three-storey 15th cent, tower remains. Of the other buildings only walls survive. (2) Affeton Castle is a restored 15th century gate-tower. The castellated building to which it gave entrance was probably erected by the Affetons in the 13th or 14th cent. and was a fortified manor house rather than a true castle. (3) Though restored the gatehouse is an interesting survival and retains many original features. It is now a residence. The barton proper has little of interest. Grade 2* building (4-5)
