More information : (TF 08584312) Mareham Grange (GT) (Site of)
(TF 08604307) Moat (GT). (1)

Area TF 08604307 (4) The site of the lost village of Mareham, or Cold
Mareham, which gave its name to Mareham Lane, the Roman road from
Bourne to Sleaford, is marked by the moat enclosing the foundations of Mareham Grange.

The Grange, earlier the property of Sempringham Priory, was held temp.Elizabeth I, by Sir Thomas Horsman, lord of the manor. (2-4)

The enclosure has been ploughed for some 20 years, and only remnants
of the moat survive. A heavy scatter of rough building stone marks
the published site of the grange.

Published survey (25") revised. (5)

No change. The land within is still ploughed and is slightly
undulating with a scatter of debris at the published site. (6)

Additional reference. (7)

TF 086 431. Site of Mareham Grange. Scheduled no. LI/310. (8)

The moated site recorded by Authorities 1-8 was mapped from poor
quality air photographs; the moat itself is seen as an earthwork on
earlier photography, but the site is now completely levelled and is
seen as a cropmark on the latest photography.

The area enclosed by the moat measures 220m by 180m; there is a
trackway approach on the west, 80m long, which is still a slight
earthwork. Centred at:-TF 0859 4308

The ditches of another enclosure, 200m by 140m, lie inside the moat
on a slightly different alignment. This enclosure appears
incomplete, but it has sub-divisions, and there is an oblong pit,
10m, at TF 0861 4302. No building remains were visible. The
ditches of other similarly aligned and incomplete enclosures were
recorded against the outer eastern side of the moat.
