More information : [TF 055401] The lost village of Crofton is mentioned in 1316 and 1334. (1-2) Crofton now consists of a farmstead, a few cottages, and a stone dovecote. The latter at TF 0544 4016, with pantiled roof and C.400 nesting holes appears contemporary with the earliest farm buildings, probably early 18th C. The farmer indicated one small field centred at TF 0553 4022, where considerable foundation stone, and some medieval pot, has been ploughed up. No earthworks other than rig and furrow survive elsewhere in the area. (3) No change. (4)
Examination of all available photography failed to identify any evidence of settlement. (5) |
