Osgodby

Hob Uid: 348406
Location :
Lincolnshire
South Kesteven
Lenton Keisby and Osgodby
Grid Ref : TF0209028080
Summary : Probable Medieval moat and deserted village with enclosure and crofts seen as cropmarks and earthworks.
More information : [TF 02022801] MOAT [GT] (1)

Osgodby is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Air photographs show
traces of desertion, at area TF 019280, the date of which is not
known.

Nothing is known of the moated site.
See TF 02 NW 4for remains
of manor house. (2-3)

The Published moat has been filled in, and the whole area is
under crop.

During perambulation, building debris was noted in the plough on
both sides of Hall Lane.

There is no other evidence of desertion on the surface. (4)

Listed by Beresford. (5)

No change since 28 5 65. (6)

The Medieval moat described by authorities 1-4, was mapped from good
quality air photographs. It was seen as earthworks in early
photographs, but has been levelled, and is visible as cropmarks in
the latest photography. Only the eastern and southern ditch of the
moated enclosure was visible at TF 0204 2798.

To the NE and partly overlying the moat and post dating it, are
remnants of cropmark ditched enclosures and crofts, forming part of
the Medieval deserted village, described by authority 4 as flanking
Hall Lane.

There was no evidence of village remains on the AP's at the NGR
cited by authorities 2-3, but the are some ornamental ponds
associated with Osgodby Manor House (recorded in TF 02 NW 4) at this
location. These ornamental ponds may have been village fishponds that
were converted to formal garden features.
(Morph No. LI.813.6.1-3)
