More information : An iron-working site using shaft-furnaces found at
Blind Eye Quarry (TF 002148) near Pickworth, 3 miles N of Great
Casterton and 2 miles from Ermine Street. Of three furnaces
standing, one was destroyed and two were excacated. Post-holes
and a domestic hearth indicate a shelter nearby.
Two iron smelting furnaces, (excavated by I M Smith) similar in
design to ones at Ashwicken, Norfolk. Presumed second-century on
account of colour-coated sherds found in the levels above the
furnace. (1-2)
Indicated site (falls in Lincs) now quarried and disused. Smith
(a former student at Nottingham Unviersity) was not traced. (3)
The furnaces described by the previous authorities were either masked
by trees or destroyed by quarrying on available air photographs. (4) |
