More information : [TF 02181460] Stone Cists found A.D. 1855[Tl] (1) Thirty-three skeletons, four stone coffins, and fragments of mullions and tracery of probably 13th century windows, were found about 1855 in a stackyard at Aunby. See TF 01 SW 9 for Aunby D.M.V. and TF 01 NW 8 for rebuilt church. (2) Almost certainly this is the site of Aunby church which is believed locally to have stood at approx. TF 0220 1459 but there are no surface indications. (3)
There is no sign of a church on available air photographs at the grid reference given by the previous authorities. Parts of the church are known to have been re-used to build St Wilfred's church in the grounds of Holywell Hall (see TF 01 NW 8). (4) |
