More information : TF 04011559 Camp (NR). (1) Multivallate hill fort, of Iron Age culture, at Careby. The work is about 850 ft by 750 ft, the distance between the inner and outer banks some 130 ft. The outer bank is very slight, and inner one is 3 ft above present ground level and 5 ft above the level of its ditch.
Published survey 1:2500 revised. (2) A fine example of a multivallate hill fort with separated dispersed ramparts situated 50 m above sea level on a south-east facing spur of loamy gravel. The work is covered by close afforestation and occupies about 13.0 acres. The internal defences consist of a rampart and ditch with an overall measurement of 22.0m, the ditch has a maximum depth of 0.6m the top of the rampart having a maximum height of 1.7m above the ditch bottom, there are two `simple gap' entrances to the north and east, but only that to the north has a corresponding causeway. The external work consists of a slight rampart only with a maximum external height of 1.0m. Again, there are two apparant simple gap entrances to the south-west and east, the latter being conveniently placed for access through the inner line. No finds have apparently been recorded from this fort which has no local name and stands some miles south of the main Lincolnshire east-west prehistoric route. The main Roman legionary line to the north (King Street) ran four miles to the east. Published survey (1:2500) revised on AM. (3-4)
Additional reference. (5)
The fort described by authorities 2-4 was seen as an earthwork on good quality air photographs (centred at TF 0401 1559). The fort is more oval than circular and is defined by 2 ditches and 2 banks. There is a simple entrance at the northern end of the inner ditch (at TF 0398 1569). The other entrances, described by the previous, authorites could not be identified on available photography, however, on all the photographs seen the fort was covered in trees. (Morph No. LI.763.1.1)
