Summary : This was extant in 1138 when it was granted to the Augustinian order for use as the abbey church of Bourne Abbey, (TF02SE5). Restoration work in 1892 recovered two fragments of Saxon work suggesting Anglian origins. The Norman nave is all that remains of the early church. Circa 1200 it had been intended to rebuild the West front with twin towers, but only the South-West tower was completed. The aisles were widened in the 15th century, when the South porch was built. The chancel was replaced in 1807. |
