Grid Ref : SP9968003970
Summary : The visible and buried remains of a slight univallate hillfort located on a broad plateau in the Chiltern Hills. The hillfort is roughly circular in plan with the interior measuring 120m north west-south east by 100m south west-north east.
More information : (SP 99680397) Enclosure (NR). (1)

A roughly circular plateau camp covering about 4-1/2 acres
consisting of a single rampart with a ditch that measures 62ft
wide and 3ft deep. There is a slight gap in the rampart to the
SE; possibly the original entrance. (2)

A univallate IA defended settlement, situated on a plateau, under
permanent pasture. It is oval in shape, measuring internally circa
120.0m NW-SE by circa 100.0m transversely. The rampart and ditch are
visible around the whole circuit, though greatly reduced by
ploughing and overlaid by a hedge line in the W arc. Where
best-preserved in the E arc, the rampart is 0.7 high and spread
to 16.0m across; the ditch is 0.4m deep and spread to 12.0m across.
There is a gap in the bank in the SE, the only entrance visible,
though it does not carry across the ditch.

There is no trace of structures in the enclosed area, and no
finds are known to the landowner.

Published survey (25') revised. (3)

SP 996 039. Whelpley Hill. Listed in gazetteer as a univallate hillfort covering 1.8ha. (4)
