Summary : Church of late 10th century origin, with early and late 12th, 13th and 14th century development phases. The Saxon tower remains but the church is mainly of 12th-14th century date. Restored in the mid 19th century . Coursed rubble and squared coursed limestone and lias with ashlar dressings and lead roof. Aisled nave, chancel, south porch and west tower. |
More information : (SP 85196381) Ch (TI) The church of All Saints at Earls Barton has a late Saxon tower but is mainly 12-14th c, the Saxon Church belonged to a small class of probably private churches of which that at Barton on Humber is the best known. Its builder would have been an immediate predecesser of Bondi, who held Earls Barton in 1066. (1) Earthwork defences around the church were probably manorial, with the church forming one element of the manorial buildings (see SP 86 SE 29). (2) In normal use. See photo. The body of the church, nave, north and south aisles is mainly C14 and C19. There is a Norman doorway within the south porch. Norman and C13 work in the chancel. (4)
