Summary : Trial trenching and partial excavation by R W Griffiths and J Southernwood in Sep 1973 revealed extensive remains of a corridor villa, with at least two tessellated floors (both robbed) but round a cobbled churchyard. The villa was badly robbed in the 4th century. The site is marked by surface finds of fragments of tegulae, flue tile and tesserae. |

Located on a board spur of land under grass and stubble, there is no trace of the excavation which was backfilled. Fragments of tegulae, flue tile and tesserae were found on the surface at SP 83263038. R Griffiths now lives in Shropshire and no excavation plan is available. No further excavation is planned. (2)
BU 60 Listed as the site of a Roman villa. (3)
Possibly related to Romano- British sherds, tile and part of a quern found to the south (see HOB UID 344536). (4) |
