Monument Number 344086

Hob Uid: 344086
Location :
Northamptonshire
Kettering
Ashley
Grid Ref : SP7940091630
Summary : Site of a Roman building (probable villa); foundations and mosaics were uncovered during railway construction in the 19th century. However this site may be related to SP 79 SE 21 which is also adjacent to the railway line.
More information : Ashley: "Several fragments of Roman pavement, urns, coins, &c.,have been found in a field called Alderston, whilst cutting for the Rugby and Stamford railway, which runs along the border of this parish". (1)

.."Also in Ashby [Sic] field, which is immediately on the other [Northants] side of the Welland, bricks, and appearances of ancient foundations, have been broken up in ploughing"(a) [Name 'Ashley' shown on sketch map.] (2)

[Cites authorities 1 & 2]
Shown on map and described as 'Villa'. (3)

[Cities authority 1] (4)

Roman Villa: site "where mosaic or tessellated pavements are recorded without description" (5)

[Area centred SP 79409163] Along the north side of the railway, in the second field from the road, a Roman coin (now lost?) was found some years ago and pieces of mortar have been found in a badger-scrape. I do not know the name 'Alderston' but this must be the area where the earlier finds were made. (6)

Nothing of significance was seen in the area indicated which is now a pasture field. (7)
