More information : DMV Quarrendon (iii) SP 788177, accepted in 1965. There are traces of earthworks visible on air photographs. (1-3) A minor deserted medieval village situated in permanent pasture, and bounded by rig and furrow. Traces of street pattern, enclosures and possible house steads are recognisable. (4) At SP 78781785 are the remains of a homestead moat, partly waterfilled, with arms approx 8.0m wide. Where dry, the moat is approx 1.3m deep. There is an exterior bank approx 1.0 high on the south arm, and traces of an exterior bank on the west arm. The enclosed area shows disturbed ground under pasture around a modern barn, and stands at the same height as the surrounding level. The moat is spring fed draining to a pond at the angle of the south and west arms. Surveyed at 1:2500 on AM. No change since report of 9.10.73. AM survey correct. (5) A rapid examination of air photography (6a) shows the settlement and probable moat as earthworks in 1969. (6) |
