More information : ('A' - SP 76760063; 'B' - 76770065) Tumuli (NR) (1) SP 767006. On the summit of Chinnor Hill there is a ? twin bowl- barrow, enclosed in the same ditch, and measuring overall 135ft long and by 75ft wide and 7ft high. Dyer states that it is possible a kidney-shaped barrow as at Whiteleaf, Bucks (SP 80 SW 1). An iron spearhead and bronze chape were found here in 1885 (2). Meaney quoting VCH speaks of one of the twin barrows on Hempton Plain, Chinnor situated 400 yds S of Bledlow Cross (SE 767 006) that was opened by a labourer (a) in 1885 (b) who found a revetment wall around its edge, just below the turf. Although no burial is mentioned, the associated AS finds of two spearheads, a bronze chape and javelin were in the possession of H Stevens of Hempton, and were seen and sketched by P Manning FSA. Another spearhead was found on the same farm after a landslip (a). (2-3) Two contiguous bowl barrows 'A' and 'B' enclosed within a single ditch on the summit of the chalk escarpment under rough grass and scrub. 'A' measures c 20.0m in diameter by 1.7m high with the top disturbed by digging. 'B' measures c 24.0m in diameter by 0.8m high also with the top disturbed. The ditch enclosing both barrows has been eroded on the lower side but elsewhere it is c 0.7m deep. Re-surveyed at 1:2500. (4)
